Crosslinking for personal interest. I'm sure there should be a better way of doing this.

This is just a little list of systems related to backlinks. It probably isn't complete.

Microsoft's Smart Tags raised a stir. The top three links from Google,
1. A list apart: Smart Tags
2. Smart tags are stupid.
3. Complete Tasks Quickly with Smart Tags in Office XP [Microsoft's site]
Lots of people got upset about this. I haven't yet looked into why, but I imagine it would be because Microsoft were to maintain the annotations database.
The sites above include a meta tag for warding off smart tags. I'm not sure what to make of this, really.
Annotation Engine
This is a slightly newer project. I need to look at this in more detail.

I'm coming to think that a nice clean separation is required, between "please list the pages that link to [parts of] this URL" and the actual reformatting of the page with little tags.
